Information on HEPA filters
The term "HEPA" is the abbreviation of the English term "
High
Efficiency
Particulate
Air" and refers to air filters with high effectiveness against particles.
HEPA filters are made of tightly woven, irregular fiber nets. They are capable of filtering the smallest particles while still being sufficiently permeable for use, for example, in air purifiers for private or commercial use.
HEPA filters are defined as filters that remove at least 99.9 percent of all dust particles (larger than 0.1–0.3 micrometers) from the air. This includes airborne viruses, bacteria, fine dust, mite eggs, pollen, smoke particles, asbestos, as well as various toxic dusts and aerosols.
Purity rate for particles with a size between 0.1 to 0.3 micrometers:
filter class | separation efficiency | transmittance |
H13 | 99,95% | 0,05% |
H14 | 99,995% | 0,005% |
Regarding cleaning effectiveness against the Corona virus
Coronaviruses have a diameter of about 60 - 160 nm (60 nm = 0.00006 mm).The HEPA filter in this device cleans particles up to 0.0003 mm in size. The virus is therefore smaller than the purity rate of the filter.
But: Viruses do not fly individually in the air, but are always enclosed in larger droplets (so-called aerosols). In human breath, the smallest droplets have a size of about 1 µm = 0.001 mm (when coughing: 10 µm = 0.01 mm). The HEPA filter captures the aerosols and also cleans the air of COVID-19 viruses.Of course, there is no 100% protection, as an air purifier does not clean the entire room volume at once and because surfaces can also be contaminated by touch. However, for risk reduction, e.g., in waiting rooms, classrooms, offices, or even in private settings, the device is very effective and recommended.
